School-Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT)

  • SCITTs provide school-led training courses, which are managed and driven by partnerships of schools.
  • Trainees follow a programme that leads to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and the qualification of a Post-Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE).
  • The PGCE element of the course is accredited by a university who provide up-to-date and relevant research to the course to enhance the practitioner-led training programme.

School Direct

  • Like SCITTs, School Direct is a school-led route into initial teacher training (ITT) for graduates run by a partnership between a lead school, other schools and an accredited teacher training provider.
  • Training places are allocated to the lead school on behalf of the partnership, usually for one year.
  • The lead school has overall responsibility for requesting places from the Department for Education (DfE) and for ensuring that the criteria for School Direct are met.

There are two types of School Direct training places available:

  1. School Direct (tuition fee) places - open to all Graduates funded by tuition fees paid by the trainee. Trainees may be eligible for a training bursary or scholarship.
  2. School Direct (salaried) places - aimed mainly at Graduates with three or more years’ work experience. Trainees are employed as an unqualified teacher.

Both routes carry the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and some may lead to the award of a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).

University Routes

  • The Undergraduate university route for primary teacher training is the Bachelor of Education (B. Ed.), a professional degree with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
  • The Postgraduate university route for teacher training is the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). You apply to study with a specific training provider at either primary or secondary in your chosen teaching subject and the majority of your study will be on the university campus. You also gain classroom experience, and spend time teaching and being trained whilst on your school placements for a minimum of 24 weeks or 120 days.

Postgraduate Apprenticeships

  • Another route into teaching is a Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship.
  • You might already be working within a school as a member of support staff, for example, as a Higher Level Teaching Assistant and your school experience has confirmed your wish to train to be a teacher. But you may still need an income.
  • A Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship is a work-based Initial Teacher Training (ITT) route for both primary and secondary that leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).  It allows you to be a trainee teacher employed by a school and to combine paid work with on and off-the-job training.

Assessment Only

  • Assessment Only route takes 12 weeks, is for graduates who are already in a teaching position, can demonstrate they meet all of the Teachers' Standards and have evidence of teaching across the full age and attainment range you aim to gain QTS in.
  • Your teaching experience can have been gained in any type of school, must be divided between two school settings over at least 2 years. Demonstrate you have taught young people from a range of backgrounds and you are familiar with different approaches to teaching learning and school management.
